All my life, I thought I was introverted. Yet, I find that talking to people who are on the same journey as me comes quite naturally. I am currently a 2nd-semester master’s student at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, majoring in Molecular Life Sciences. Studying and living in Germany for the past 11 months has been an incredibly enriching experience, both academically and personally. I won’t lie—the winter was quite harsh, but as the Germans like to say, “There is no bad weather, only bad clothes!”
From the initial stages of applying for the APS certificate to receiving my visa approval, I have been supported not only by my friends and family but also by a diverse network of individuals I’ve met through various networking platforms and events. Now, I hope to be that person for someone else!

Wie geht’s, Leute?
It has been five years since I moved to Berlin to pursue my doctorate in Biochemistry at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. As I reflect on the path I chose, I find no trace of regret. With Germany’s infrastructure and history of investment in fundamental research, coming to Germany for my doctoral studies was something I had always planned on doing. But anyone who has moved to a different country and ventured into the unknown would tell you: “It is easier said than done…”.
Although the initial period came with a number of hurdles that I needed to overcome, with the pandemic of 2020 bringing its own set of issues, I was able to find my place on German soil. I have always given more importance to the unquantifiable parts of life. I now have lifelong friends, colleagues I enjoy working with, mentors who have guided me, and a life I truly appreciate. The growth I’ve experienced—learning to stand tall, independent and strong—is something I cherish deeply. All of this was nurtured here in Germany.
I hold a simple belief: the barriers I faced should not be the same for those who follow. This belief drives my desire to give back, to guide others as they walk their own paths. I am currently the President of the Indian Students’ Association of Berlin, where my team and I assist Indian students in various matters while acting as a conduit to the Embassy of India. I am also a member of several other scientific organizations in Berlin and Germany that aim to integrate and network young researchers and students in different realms of science.
It is this same spirit that led me to become a DAAD Young Ambassador. The organisation and the programme allow me to meet many people who are wishing to take the same leap of faith I did when moving to Germany. Here, I can share my own story to give them the nudge they need.
You can always look me and my credentials up any time in this day and age. But as a DAAD Young Ambassador, I want this testimonial to focus on echoing this sentiment: “It is easier said than done, but it will all work out.”

I am Uddipta Raj Deka, currently pursuing my Master’s in International Media Cultural Work at Hochschule Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany. Before my second Master’s in Germany, I spent three years working as a journalist, primarily in geopolitical analysis and video production. I’ve contributed to stories for both international and regional news, including my time as an Associate Producer for CNN News18, where I covered major global events like Russia’s war in Ukraine and the 2024 U.S. elections.
In addition to my journalism background, I hold a Master’s in Journalism and Mass Communication and a Bachelor’s in English Literature from North Eastern Hill University in India. I have a passion for wildlife conservation, and my Master’s dissertation was a qualitative analysis of human-elephant conflict in media. Also, I’m well adept in Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and After Effects, and have freelanced in videography and graphic design.
My current studies in Hochschule Darmstadt now focus on areas like 360° full-dome film-making, 3D Spatial Sound Wave (SSW) compositions, media laws, and creative coding. My journey to Germany for my Master’s has been full of memorable experiences—from the warmth of strangers to the beauty of German orderliness. The diverse community and the emphasis on punctuality have taught me a lot more in a short time. But expecting things to be easy here can feel like chasing a mirage. Germany demands patience, adaptability and a deep respect for its structure and rules. A passionate youngster highly interested in technological studies, I started my academic journey in Bangladesh with a dip into the ocean of Computer Science and Engineering. While I loved learning about how systems work and how technology can shape the future, I soon realized I needed something more challenging and greater horizons. It was at this point that studying in Germany came my way as a country that is not only famous for its rich history and diversity in culture but also for its technological advancement in today’s current world. My further study plan went solid in Germany after attending a DAAD seminar, which opened my eyes to the world of possibilities in German universities. It felt like the stars had aligned, especially since I have always been a fan of German football!
Germany, being an engineering hub and home to some of the best universities in the world, felt like the perfect place for me to grow academically and as a person. But why Hamburg? Well, Hamburg stood out for more reasons than one. It wasn’t just a lively city with loads of maritime history and beautiful architecture; it came with the quirky reputation of having more bridges than both Venice and Amsterdam combined! The mix of modernity with its charming canals was irresistible. I knew Hamburg would be an ideal place to live, study, and enjoy football weekends.
It all came together when I came across the Information Engineering program at Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften-Hamburg. This innovative combination of technology, data analysis, and engineering perfectly fit what I was passionate about finding real-world problems to be solved with technology. Further, what really impressed me a lot was the commitment of HAW Hamburg to hands-on learning and the emphasis on practical applications of knowledge. I was intrigued by the mix of academic rigour and exposure to real-world experiences that it had to offer. Furthermore, Hamburg stands at the centre of German tech companies, so the opportunities to network and learn directly from the best in business are endless.
Living in Germany has been life-changing: from delighting myself with the football culture to the support of my favourite Bundesliga teams, from deep diving into complex algorithms and data the journey is so rewarding and exhilarating. I look forward to continuing my journey and exploring this amazing atmosphere as I grow by merging my love of technology with enthusiasm for German culture.
As a young DAAD ambassador, I will always try to pass my experience and knowledge towards aspiring students who are willing to come to Germany.

Servus! I am currently studying in the final year of my Bachelor’s program in Electrical Engineering, with a specialisation in Renewable Energies, at Mannheim University of Applied Sciences. This stay here in Germany has been wonderful, and now I am looking forward to sharing everything about the German university system and its culture.
One of the highlights of Germany thus far is the fact that government-funded universities are offering a high-quality education. Learning environments are created by providing facilities with state-of-the-art technologies and professors with vast experience, although professors are learned and accessible, which makes an academic journey very smooth and rewarding. As for the language, mine started first year in English and then slowly converted into German. This combination enabled me to fit into the academic system with ease because my language improved. Intensive courses in German during semester breaks and parallel language classes held by the university helped me reach a C1 level in German after one year. Similarly, the same language ability has enabled me to have opportunities to gain hands-on industry experience right from my studying years.
I recommend to every upcoming student to invest time in learning German since that is a real game changer. This opens up the ways to academic and professional excellence, with plenty of social links and new cultural experiences. The multicultural environment in Germany and the friendly people have made my stay here an unforgettable experience. Now, I am truly passionate about inspiring and promoting further exploration into the outstanding educational opportunities that Germany provides, along with a vibrant student life.

I am Isanka Udayakantha from Sri Lanka, and currently reside in Stuttgart, Germany. I was awarded an EPOS-DAAD scholarship in 2023 and am currently doing a master’s degree (Second Semester) in M.Sc. WASTE at the University of Stuttgart. My focus area is Air Quality, Solid Waste and Wastewater Process Engineering.
My interest in Engineering first began as a teenager and led me to do secondary education in the mathematics stream. Despite the extreme competitiveness of this exam, I was able to get selected to the engineering faculty of the University of Moratuwa, the highest-ranked engineering faculty in the Sri Lanka. I completed my degree in 2020 with first-class honours. This was truly where I began to develop an interest in conducting research and pursuing a career in academia, with having two and a half years of working experience in the field of Mining Engineering and one year in a university research field.
I’m particularly interested in identifying the gaps between theoretical and practical levels and that’s why I was seeking a master’s program like “targeting excellence and addressing crucial industrial needs”. Germany has world-class engineering and technical programs, cutting edge research, affordable education and the reputation. I applied through the EPOS-DAAD scholarship to University of Stuttgart as a master’s student. Another key reason I applied to DAAD (EPOS) is the incredible opportunity it provides to interact with students from all over the world with a variety of professional and ethnic diversity. I’m still excited to collaborate with them. This, I feel, is the type of networking that generates innovative ideas about solutions to various global issues. Not only that, Germany is a central European country and geography that caters to a wide spectrum of traveler interests, from history enthusiasts and environment lovers to foodies and festival goers.
I’m concentrating on my advanced studies as a graduate student to conduct more laboratory-level experiments, collect updated information and then provide engineering solutions to global difficulties with effective and efficient outcomes at the professional level hence my ambition to be a global level researcher while sharing my experiences with the newbees — specifically engineering solutions to the developing countries.

My experience there enabled me to collaborate with specialists and researchers who are pushing the boundaries of technology and environmental science. The combination of academic rigor and practical experience provided me the courage to tackle complicated challenges and think critically about global issues. It was more than just a career milestone; it was a transformative experience that enlarged my perspective.
Beyond Germany, I’ve had the opportunity to work on innovative electronics projects such as memristors at IIT Patna. At my university, I serve as Chair of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, where I am able to bring students together through technical initiatives, bridging the gap between theory and practice.
What motivates me the most as a DAAD Young Ambassador is the desire to show students that studying abroad, particularly in Germany, is more than just an academic step; it is an adventure that may change your life. I want to help students make confident decisions, knowing that the future holds potential for personal and professional growth.
Let us explore these possibilities together! I’m here to help you, answer your questions, and explore the numerous options that DAAD and Germany have to offer. Through “Change by Exchange,” we can all become a part of a greater, interconnected world.

Hello,
My name is Nisha, and I am from Nepal. I am currently in the early stages of my journey in Germany, having lived here for just over a month. However, the path that brought me here began long ago in Nepal, and through my experiences, I hope to guide others who are also aspiring to study in Germany.
I hold a degree in Civil Engineering from Tribhuvan University and have gained valuable experience working as a Water/Hydro Engineer on hydropower projects in Nepal. Now, I am pursuing my Master’s in Water Resources and Environmental Management at Leibniz University in Hannover.
Germany’s reputation for offering a world-class education system and the chance to collaborate with brilliant people from diverse backgrounds drew me to this country. The opportunity to work in cutting-edge research facilities is a critical aspect of my academic goals. Since my arrival, I have also fallen in love with the German language and the rich cultural experiences that have made this journey even more meaningful.
One of the most significant milestones for me has been receiving the EPOS scholarship from DAAD, which has alleviated financial pressures, allowing me to focus entirely on my academic and personal growth. This scholarship has provided me with the freedom to dive deeply into both my studies and the cultural aspect of Germany.
I believe that many talented individuals deserve the same opportunities, which is why I am excited to be part of the Young Ambassador community. I look forward to helping others navigate through this very same experience.

Hello Everyone!
Germany, with its tuition-free, flexible, and world-class education system, offers more than just academic excellence — it’s a transformative life experience. Living here has taught me independence, patience, and the importance of adapting to a multicultural environment, preparing me for the challenges ahead.
Since starting my studies at Technische Hochschule Nuremberg, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the warmth and helpfulness of the people. In contrast to the perception back home where directness is often mistaken for rudeness, this has been refreshing. Over the past year, I’ve grown both professionally and personally. My university has provided numerous professional opportunities, such as career days, where I honed my networking skills, which later proved invaluable. The course structure emphasizes research, problem-solving, and presentation skills, while the professors are always available to mentor you if you seek their guidance.
Moreover, I’ve worked as a student and later as an intern at two of the Big4 firms, which gave me crucial insights into how to apply, ace interviews and succeed in the professional world. The key is thorough preparation, researching the company, and tailoring your application to highlight relevant skills. In interviews, being confident, clear, and demonstrating adaptability is essential. I also learned about the German work culture, which values punctuality, direct communication, and a strong work-life balance. Knowing the German language, either beforehand or learning it during your time here, makes a significant difference in both personal and professional settings.
But Germany is about more than academics and work. The country’s beautiful landscapes, diverse regional cuisine, and rich festivals have enriched my experience and contributed to making me a well-rounded individual.
I firmly believe Germany is an excellent destination for higher education, offering practical and professional benefits. My time here has been transformative, and I’m grateful for this platform to share my insights with future aspirants. If you have any questions about applying to universities and transitioning to a career in Germany, feel free to reach out — I’m happy to help!

Hello, I am Jayani Thalagala, currently in my final year of a Bachelor’s degree in International Business Management, specialising in Marketing at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. Coming to Germany in 2018 for my higher education has been one of the best decisions of my life. Leaving my home country, Sri Lanka, was a major step, but these past six years have been truly rewarding, both personally and professionally.
When I first arrived in Germany, I knew no one and had to navigate an entirely new environment. Over time, I adapted, becoming financially independent and learning to manage life on my own. I take pride in the support system I’ve built, surrounded by wonderful people who have made this journey much easier and more fulfilling. This experience has allowed me to not only thrive academically but also grow as an individual. I have had the chance to explore different countries, broaden my cultural understanding, and learn new languages, including German and Spanish.
Germany, in my opinion, offers immense opportunities for students willing to put in the effort. The country’s educational system and multicultural environment provide a solid foundation for both academic and personal growth. As a DAAD Young Ambassador, I am excited to share my experiences and encourage other students to take advantage of these opportunities. With the support of DAAD, you can not only achieve academic excellence but also develop into the best version of yourself while contributing to this vibrant, dynamic country. I am confident that Germany can be a transformative place for those willing to embrace the journey.

Namaskara! Hello! Moin Moin!
My name is Prajwal Kumar KV, and I hail from Bangalore, India. I completed my bachelor’s degree from Alliance University, Bangalore, in 2020. After gaining two years of experience as a Senior Systems Engineer at a startup, I decided to pursue my master’s degree, and I was fortunate to receive several offers for the winter 2022 intake in Germany. I chose to study MSc in Microelectronics & Microsystems at TUHH, Hamburg. After a year, I applied for the dual degree program at the Northern Institute of Technology (NIT) and I am currently pursuing an MBA in Technology Management alongside my MSc. I am also working at NXP Semiconductors, where I will soon begin my thesis.
During the academic year 2023/24, I had the honour of serving as the elected President of the Indian Students Association at TUHH (ISATUHH). With a significant Indian community on campus, comprising 12% of the student body, we celebrate festivals such as Holi, Diwali, and Dussehra, and organize orientation programs and online information seminars for incoming students. We also volunteer to assign buddies and arrange free airport pickups to ensure that new students feel welcome and supported upon their arrival in Germany.
As a newly selected DAAD Young Ambassador, I am excited to share my experiences of life in Germany. This includes not only academics—Germany is renowned for its cutting-edge research, technology, and infrastructure—but also the rich intercultural exchange on campus, my travel adventures across Europe, an overview of living costs and expenses in Germany, and much more. Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn and reach out with any questions!

My name is Sidharth Singh (or Sid), and I’m currently a 21-year-old student from New Delhi.
2024 marks the start of my Master’s degree in Management and Technology at the Technical University of Munich, and the end of my TUM-BWL Bachelor’s degree, which I have been studying for the last three years. Over this time, I’m fortunate to have formed great friendships, and I am now very comfortable in the city despite the initial difficulties I encountered during COVID-19.
I was also able to obtain invaluable work experience, which I completed alongside my degree and will significantly support my transition into a professional working environment. I am incredibly grateful for my time in Germany so far, thanks to these unique and exceptional opportunities, and I have been well rewarded by my decision to come here.
However, I understand that many newcomers are intimidated by challenges during the initial settling-in period or may face significant culture shocks at any point in this period – this is why I wanted to be a DAAD Young Ambassador. I want to help incoming students or professionals wherever I can with their journey coming to Germany, and be a point of contact to make this transition more seamless (and less stressful) overall.

Hello Everyone!
I am Vidyasagar Sharma, pursuing PhD in Sociology at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. I started my PhD in April 2023. My doctoral project, “Navigating Universities: Student Aspirations, Boundaries, and Transformations in India and the Philippines,” is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
I am from Bihar, India, and I completed my Master’s in Political Science from Jawaharlal Nehru University and MPhil in Political Science from the University of Delhi. While working on my MPhil dissertation, I learned about PhD opportunities in Germany from my supervisor. To further explore my interest in pursuing a PhD in Germany, I obtained more information about the admission process, funding opportunities, and other details through DAAD – India. As a first-generation researcher, I see Germany as an exceptional destination for higher education research. The academic environment and research infrastructure in German universities are unmatched in creating a collaborative and inclusive space for knowledge production. The support system for international students in Germany is unique, making you feel like you belong in both institutional and social settings.
My strong interest in studying the students’ aspirations, trajectories, and experiences of navigating university spaces in South Asia has laid the groundwork for my future endeavours. As a DAAD Young Ambassador, I aim to share my journey of pursuing a PhD with prospective students who wish to come to Germany and conduct research in the fields of anthropology, political science, and sociology. My vision is for higher education research to create an inclusive university environment and promote academic collaboration, fostering a sense of belonging and a compassionate future for all. As a YA, I aim to fulfil the mission of promoting Germany as a great place to study and conduct research and make social justice a core research focus between India and Germany.
I look forward to continuing this fulfilling adventure and inspiring others to begin their own life-changing journeys in Germany.

Germany, for me, is a celebration of endless dreams. From Chennai, India, I ventured to a land that has profoundly shaped my vision and purpose. My academic journey began with a Master of Science in Supply Chain Management at Constructor University Bremen, where I explored the complexities of global logistics and management. This foundation paved the way for my PhD in Circular Economy, Sustainable Supply Chains, and International Politics, supported by a grant from Schaeffler Automotive Bühl GmbH & Co. KG.
Germany has not only broadened my academic horizons but also deeply impacted my personal and professional growth. As President of the Indian Students Association Bremen (ISAB), I mentored our association to win the Best Student Association Award 2022 from Indian Students in Germany (ISG), an initiative of the Embassy of India in Berlin. This recognition was a result of our extensive efforts in collaborating with local institutions, government bodies, politicians, and businesses, creating platforms for students to drive positive societal change.
Germany’s rich cultural tapestry and interactions with esteemed leaders have ignited my passion for sustainable development. These experiences have shaped my current roles in Bangalore & Chennai as the Head of Supply Chain and Projects at Pearltri Foods Pvt. Ltd. and Sustainability Lead at Aspire Systems, where I integrate sustainable practices into business operations.
As I continue to serve as a DAAD YA for a second term, my goal is to help strengthen the bilateral relations between India and Germany through education and research. I am here to guide you and share my experiences to support your aspirations. If you are considering studying or researching in Germany, I want to help you navigate this journey with confidence and purpose. Feel free to reach out! I am gladly here to make your path smoother and more rewarding.
