German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina: Leopoldina Postdoc Scholarship

Programme Description

The programme is intended for outstanding junior post-doctoral scientists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland from all disciplines represented in the Leopoldina and who already have their own research profile. If accepted, they have the opportunity to head their own projects at the most renowned international research institutions of their disciplines. German candidates are expected to opt for research facilities abroad. Austrian and Swiss scientists are only eligible for support if they apply at a host institution in Germany. The programme's goal is for the scholars to return to their home countries after the completion of the scholarship and share the acquired knowledge at the local centres of research.

Target Group

Young scientists from all areas of the natural sciences, medicine, the history of sciences or any other disciplines covered by sections of the Academy are eligible to apply. Applications can be submitted up to 7 years after completion of the doctoral degree. Applicants must have a distinctive research capability, display an independent research profile and be distinguished by excellent achievements.

Academic Requirements

  • doctoral degree, completed not longer than 7 years ago
  • subject area: all areas of the natural sciences, medicine, the history of sciences or any other disciplines covered by sections of the Academy

Duration

The programme is designed for projects with a duration of 1 to 2 years.

Scholarship Value

The funding comprises a personal, customised full grant. This includes a basic grant (in accordance with the provisions of the German Research Foundation, DFG, for post-doctoral/research grants) and, if necessary, additional allowances depending on marital status and host city and a monthly allocation of 250 EUR for material and consumable expenses, such as travel costs, laboratory equipment etc. Any costs that exceed these allowances should be listed and applied for separately within the application.
If the fellow shows outstanding academic performance during the funding period, the grant amount may be raised by up to 10 per cent.

The Leopoldina fellowship coordinator is a permanent contact for the fellows, ensuring individual mentoring and support throughout the entire sponsorship period.

Application Papers

Please find the application forms and further information on the application procedure here.

Application Deadline

Applications may be submitted at any time. Fellowships are awarded 4 times a year. Board meetings are held on average every 3 to 4 months.
