Scholarships for Study & Research in Germany

The DAAD offers a wide range of scholarship programmes for students, graduates, and researchers from South Asia to support study and research in Germany. Below is a list of key funding opportunities available across different academic levels.

During Bachelor Studies

The following scholarships are available to students pursuing their Bachelor’s degree. For the eligibility criteria check the scholarship announcements.

University Summer Courses (HSK)

The HSK (Hochschulsommerkurse) program by DAAD offers summer courses for international students to enhance their German language skills and cultural knowledge. It is open to undergraduate and graduate students belonging to any subject field registered at one of the higher education institutions in India, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka and possessing at least B1 level of German language proficiency. The funding is provided for the duration of the course which should at least be 18 teaching days.

This programme facilitates the exchange of international interns with Germany. The students pursuing graduation, post-graduation and PhD in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, agriculture and forestry (IAESTE) can apply for the scholarship to receive funding for a duration of 2 to 12 months.

Combined Study and Practice Stays for Engineers from Developing Countries (KOSPIE) with Indian IITs

This scholarship allows students from Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) to pursue project work as a part of their master’s thesis at a TU9 university in Germany. Scholarship holders are provided funding to conduct their dissertation at one of the TU9 universities which includes RWTH Aachen University, TU Berlin, TU Dresden, TU Braunschweig, Leibniz University Hannover, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, TU Munich, University of Stuttgart and TU Darmstadt. The scholarship finances a stay for a maximum of 7 months.

DLR, Germany’s national research centre offers the opportunity to students pursuing postgraduation in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transport, and digitalization to take part in the implementation of German space program at one of the DLR institutes in Germany. The funding is provided for a maximum of 9 months.

It is a co-funded programme which is open to post-docs and researchers at an IITs and CSIRs and provides the opportunity of research stays in Germany for up to 3 months with a mandatory reciprocal visit from the German side.

The DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships are a collaborative program between the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Designed for post-doctoral researchers and senior scientists in fields such as aeronautics, space, energy, transport, and digitalization, the fellowship offers the chance to participate in cutting-edge research and contribute to Germany’s space program at DLR institutes. Funding supports post-docs for 6 to 24 months and senior scientists for 1 to 3 months.

Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience (PRIME)

This funding programme supports international mobility in the postdoctoral phase of early career researchers of all nationalities and disciplines who seek to gain professional experience in Germany through temporary positions at German universities instead of traditional scholarships. They are given an opportunity to combine a fixed-term position at a German university with a research stay abroad. The funding comprises of a 12-month phase abroad and a 6-month integration phase at a German university, where the recipients are employed as postdoctoral researchers for the entire duration of the funding.
