1960 - 1969

  • The DAAD started its work in India in September 1960 with Dr Heinz Hessbeger as the Director (1960-1968)
  • It operated out of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in New Delhi

1961

  • DAAD and the IISc Bangalore (Indian Institute of Science) collaborated to create the first German textbook for scientists
  • Cultural weeks celebrated in Jaipur and Kathmandu for the first time; in cooperation with DAAD German language teachers

1962

  • The Indian government and the DAAD funded scholarships for German academics to travel to India
  • One-year scholarships offered to the Indian ministries as well as to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)
  • DAAD relocated to the German Cultural Institute (Goethe-Institut / Max Müller Bhavan New Delhi)

1963

  • Cooperation with CSIR intensified. Indian scientists from various institutions of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) awarded DAAD scholarships
  • A group of 10 Vice-Chancellors from Indian universities visited Germany to familiarise themselves with the German university education system
  • The first conference of DAAD German language teachers held in Pune (then Poona), India

1964

  • The re-invitation programme was started for DAAD alumni

1965

1965

  • The first seminar of DAAD alumni from across India was held in Mumbai (then Bombay) to discuss their experiences in Germany
  • Agreement between the CSIR and the DAAD on the exchange of scientists signed

1966

1966

  • Signing of the first supplementary agreement to the Madras Agreement for the development of IIT Madras, the DAAD undertook the implementation of scholarship programmes for the institute

1967

1967

  • An intensive programme for training German language teachers in India was launched at selected Indian universities

1968

1968

  • The Government of India started to offer 10 scholarships annually to German students and postgraduates
  • Dr Joachim Wiercimok joined as the new Director (1968-72)

1969

1969

  • Signing of the cultural agreement between the Government of India and the Federal Republic of Germany

  • The first major meeting of DAAD “Lektoren” with their Indian counterparts
